How To Refer A Patient

Our upright Open MRI scanners at our centres in London and Birmingham, use the latest technology and are designed specifically to scan patients in weight-bearing positions. The scanners also bring benefits to your clients that may suffer from anxiety or those that may suffer from claustophobia.

We are able to scan private, self-funding and NHS patients.

Images are of the highest quality for an Open system, and our experienced Consultant Radiologists are able to provide a report for you within 72 hours of the scan being performed.

We are able to send images securely and the full diagnostics report will be sent to you within 72 hours.

How to Refer

A Private Patient

For private patients all we require is their membership details and authorisation number.

Providing the patient’s phone number will help to speed the process of booking an appointment.

How to Refer

An NHS Patient

For NHS patients we need a letter of approval from the fundholder to say that they will fund the scan.

Providing the patient’s phone number will help to speed the process of booking an appointment.

Weight-bearing position

The revolutionary design of the Upright Open MRI scanner allows MR imaging of most parts of the body.

It is particular applicable to the spine, the major joints and the pelvic floor which can be examined under physiological conditions, upright in the weight-bearing position. Traditional and open scanners may not be able to detect pathology that becomes visible only when a patient is scanned in the upright position.

Upright Open MRI scanners are also helpful:

  • As a problem-solving modality in those who have had a negative, or unhelpful ‘conventional’ MR examination
  • In patients with a ‘failed-back’ following previous surgery

 Patients can be imaged:

  • in a sitting position (dependent on type of examination)
  • in a flexion, extension, rotation (London) and lateral bending (London)
  • in their position of pain
  • lying down
  • standing (dependent on type of examination)

Comfortable MRI Diagnostics

The scanner is equipped with a unique patient handling system that moves the patient into the magnet and places the anatomy of interest into the centre of the magnetic field. It also can rotate the vertically-orientated patient into a horizontal position (or anywhere in between) so the patient can be scanned lying down as in conventional MRI scanning.

Patients who may also be considered for Upright MRI scans include:

  • patients who are claustrophobic or anxious and unable to tolerate the confines of a conventional scanner
  • patients who are larger and who find it difficult to into a constricted space of a conventional scanner
  • patients who are unable to lie supine whatever the reason
  • patients who need to be observed during their scan
  • 18 years +

Upright Open scanners provide your patients a comfortable and friendly experience.  During the scan they can see the radiographer at all times and are even able to watch television or watch a DVD (dependent on type of examination).

Specialist Reporting

Each of our centres has a dedicated team of specialist reporting Consultant MSK radiologists and neuroradiologists.

We have 18 sub-specialist consultant radiologists able to provide the most informed and informative diagnosis for all patient musculoskeletal and neurological scans.

See our team here.

State-of-the-Art Technology

In London, our community Diagnostic Centre has an Upright/Open FONAR Indomitable 0.6T machine and a Magnifico Open Esaote 0.4T. Our Birmingham Centre has an MROPEN 0.5T Paramed Medical Systems machine.

The revolutionary design of the scanners at all locations enable patients to simply walk in and be scanned.

Where To Refer

In London we can perform standing scans but we generally scan with the patient in a seated position which still shows the effect of gravity on the spine. In Leeds and Birmingham we currently scan in a seated or slightly tilted position or lying down.

Our staff and Radiologists are always available to help answer your questions and to advise you as necessary.
